      I no longer work in a lab in a university, so I do not produce work directly that will create new medicines and so on.

      However, what I do now is enable many many scientists to do their own work, so I help in that way. I look after an area of science that we fund, and it is my responsibility to make sure that we are funding the right areas of science – the best areas. So I help to make sure that those who are most likely to help the human race get the funding they need to keep going.
